Industrial Technology
Industrial Technology is a practical skills based course that has a timber focus, providing opportunities for students to develop knowledge, understanding and skills in relation to a variety of timbers and associated industries.
Core modules develop knowledge and skills in the use of materials, tools and techniques related to timber which are enhanced and further developed through the study of specialist modules in:
- cabinetwork
- wood machining
Practical projects undertaken will involve students in developing understanding, knowledge and skills in:
- timber selection, characteristics, design aspects, processing, production;
- Occupational Health and Safety;
- a range of hand and power tools;
- techniques to prepare, join and finish timber;
- workplace communication skills;
- timber industry which will link industrial processes and production techniques and career paths;
- societal and environmental impact of the timber industry;
- information and communication techniques including word processing, spreadsheets, web searches and graphs.
Projects will cater for student's interests and abilities and may be furniture or other household items. Projects will allow students to engage in hands-on interaction with designing, planning and production of timber items while developing critical thinking skills with evaluation and practical problem solving activities.
