Science
The Science program at MacKillop College is aimed at encouraging scientific knowledge and skills and teaching scientific literacy. At the same time students are encouraged to develop a love of learning generally and learning Science in particular, better equipping them to participate fully as responsible, informed decision makers within their communities and more fully allowing the vast range of career options available in the diverse field of Science. Students will be made aware of Catholic values when dealing with various scientific issues such as genetic engineering and evolution.
Stage 4 & 5
The Science Faculty aims to provide a course of study for Years 7 - 10 which meets the needs, aspirations and interests of students. It stresses the value and dignity of the individual as well as the Catholic ethos of the College, while at the same time following the prescribed NSW Stage 4 & 5 syllabus. All students participate in the ICAS Science Competition and selected students are encouraged to participate in the RACI Chemistry Quiz. An enrichment program is provided for Year 8 students identified as having an interest and extensive ability in Science.
Stage 6
The Senior Courses at MacKillop College follow the various syllabuses as prescribed by the NSW Board of Studies. The courses presently offered by the College are:
- Agriculture - involves agricultural production, marketing and management sustainability.
- Biology - includes the study of local ecosystems, genetics, evolution and diseases.
- Chemistry - deals with polymers, use of ethanol as a fuel, water analysis and monitoring and managing chemical reactions/systems
- Physics - studies units on electricity, motion, space and medical physics.
- Senior Science - incorporates the study of plants, the local environment, lifestyle Chemistry and medical technologies.
