Textiles Technology

Textiles Technology is a practical skills based course which allows students to develop knowledge, understanding and skills with a variety of textiles materials and technologies. Students are required to complete design projects throughout the course which integrate the Areas of Study with the Focus Areas.

The Areas of Study are:

  • Design 
  • Properties and performance of textiles
  • Textiles and Society

Focus Areas are:

  • Apparel 
  • Furnishings
  • Costume
  • Textiles Arts 
  • Non-apparel

Students will be engaged in a variety of activities which involve:

  • properties, performance and uses of textiles fabrics;fibres, yarns and fabrics, their construction, colouration and finishing;
  • experimentation and investigation of fibres, yarns and fibres;
  • historical and cultural influences of design work; 
  • investigation of textiles designers and textile industry;
  • communication of design ideas and design process;
  • being creative; 
  • using a range of technologies;
  • consumer textiles;
  • current innovations and technologies;
  • multimedia applications and computer programs to communicate design ideas and project work.

Throughout the course students will be encouraged to transfer knowledge to new situations and projects, building on technical skills and past experiences.
Textiles projects will cater for student's abilities and interests, providing opportunities to be creative, independent learners, to explore functional and aesthetic aspects of textiles, demonstrate responsibility in decision making and encourage individuals to express ideas and opinions.
